Introduction
The distance between the earth and the sun averages at about 150 million kilometres (Lydolph, 1985). Even over this great distance the sun’s solar resource could exceed the world’s energy consumption rate many times over. The underlining issue is that solar energy has to be harnessed in some way.
In recent years, the Edinburgh University's School of Engineering has been using a sophisticated numerical weather forecasting model to hindcast wind speeds over the UK and Northern Ireland. It provides hourly wind speed information at 3km resolution and does a very good job at representing historic wind speeds. This project will use data from the Met Office to develop a high resolution hindcast model of the UK solar resource. |
